The Burke Tribute awards scholarships athletes attending Bowie State University.
In August of 2011, Raymond Burke requested the establishment of this scholarship just before losing his battle to colon cancer. Coach Burke had a specific requirement for this scholarship, “they must be a student first.” Raymond believed academics took precedent over athletics. Raymond Burke was an innovative, seasoned coach that had a passion for developing student-athletes.
He began his coaching career his senior year at Bowie State University where he served as a basketball coach for the freshman team. Coach Burke continued his coaching career at Delaware State University, Central State University, and Allen University. After leaving Allen University in 1989, Raymond went on to own a variety of businesses but continued to find time to coach various community leagues. Coach Burke later worked at Montrose Christian School as the girls’ basketball coach and Athletic Director.
An annual event dedicated to honoring Coach Burke’s memory and serves as an avenue to continue his legacy. This event raises money for the scholarships provided for the student-athletes awarded.
LIFE, Inc. will accept applications until July 15th.
